Discovery Program

A flexible preschool program 

The Discovery Program can act as a precursor to the SJES Montessori program or as a flexible preschool gradually preparing children for Kindergarten.

2 Days: Tuesday and Thursday

3 Days: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

5 Days: Monday - Friday

Times: available 7:15 AM – 6:00 PM; families are encouraged to drop off and pick up their children at times that best suit their needs and schedule. This program is designed for families seeking a flexible, high-quality preschool with options for a 2- day, 3 day, or 5 day a week program.

Discovery I

Ages: Approximately 2 ½ - 3 ½   

Discovery I sets the stage for success in our Discovery II/Pre-K or Montessori Program  

Brief Description: The Discovery I Program at St. James’ Episcopal School has the goal of enhancing the cognitive and social/emotional abilities of children. Children in this program work on skills including but not limited to verbal communication; identification and classification of objects by size, color, shape, and design; fine motor skills; and the development of appropriate social skills. This program also actively helps children who are still in the process of potty-training. This program is designed for families seeking a flexible, high-quality environment with options for a 2-day, 3 day, or 5 day a week program.

Discovery II and Discovery Pre-K

Ages: 3, 4 and 5

Discovery II and Discovery Pre-K are flexible programs which prepare children for kindergarten.

Brief Description: The Discovery II and Discovery Pre-K Programs at St. James’ Episcopal School offer an innovative curriculum which combines the Montessori model of early childhood with the Texas School Ready Curriculum, which prepares children for success in public school Kindergarten. The curriculum combines planned learning centers as well as utilization of Montessori materials that allow for child choice and self-direction, small group work, and supportive teaching. The development of language, mathematical reasoning, and scientific thought are emphasized.

During the 2012 - 2013 school year, our Discovery Pre-K program will also benefit from the A Community for Education (ACE) literacy program. The ACE mission is to ensure that all children develop a strong foundation in early literacy skills during their first years in school.  The "hands-on" curriculum uses song charts and multi-sensory tools to develop language and literacy concepts including listening comprehension, alphabet knowledge, concepts of print, phonological awareness, and emergent writing.
